Do you have a desire to improve? Have you sought purpose to adorn your identity? Are you an explorer of the world around you? Do you have an interest in growing your network to include men of shared values, principles and moral compass? These are some of the desires that lead men to investigate Freemasonry. These were desires of mine which were satisfied by joining the Craft. Another, perhaps preeminent, desire that I believe all Freemasons seek, and hopefully most of us find in Freemasonry, is a promise of mutual respect, trust, and support known as Brotherhood. Freemasonry is its sanctuary.
This concept transcends friendship. The principles of Brotherhood manifest in the unconditional support we offer each other. We stand up for one another, even when inconvenient. After long periods of absence, the bond remains unbroken. Sacrifice without expectation of reciprocation, knowing our Brother would do the same. Within this framework, men can work towards a unified purpose, understanding that each brings a unique perspective and strength to the collective.
Brotherhood is pivotal in shaping the bonds men have shared across ages. However, Brotherhood is seemingly in decay. The digital age, with its instantaneous and superficial connections, is eroding the depth of bonds that earlier generations took for granted. Prioritization of individual gain over collective well-being is compromising the principles of mutual support and loyalty.
We might take solace in the fact that Brotherhood is not an anachronism. It is a timeless human yearning. Humans have an intrinsic need for belonging. Hopefully, despite the methods of connection changing, the need for deep, meaningful bonds remains.
While modernity poses challenges to traditional observance, the underlying principles of Brotherhood remain unchanged, awaiting those who seek them. Consequently, if we agree that Freemasonry is the sanctuary of Brotherhood, then coming to Lodge is the practical application of satisfying your desire to become a Freemason.
